In 1995, they came to Munich for the first time, the newly formed band led by frontman Dave Grohl, who had been Nirvana's drummer until Kurt Cobain's death – which is why, at that time, the Foo Fighters' first album was still listed in the Nirvana section of many music shops. At the concert in the half-empty Charterhalle at the old airport in Riem, Grohl and his bandmates gave a taste of what was to come in their own successful career. The concert critic for the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote at the time: ‘We'll be hearing a lot more from the Foo Fighters.’ How true.
With their fourth studio album, ‘One by One,’ they topped the British charts for the first time in 2002, and ‘Wasting Light’ (2011) catapulted the band to number one in Germany as well as in their US homeland. Their tours have always been major events, taking them to the world's largest halls and arenas. On the ‘Everything Or Nothing At All Tour’ in 2024, The Guardian praised the band's ‘thrilling intensity,’ while the Evening Standard named the Foo Fighters the ‘undisputed kings of stadium rock.’ Fans can see for themselves at the band's first Munich open-air concert on 17 June.
